Our Story
Where tradition meets passion, and every dish tells a story.
The Beginning
Sakura Gardens was born from a dream to bring the authentic flavors of Japan to the heart of Ottawa. Founded in 2018, our restaurant represents more than just a dining destination—it's a bridge between two cultures, two continents, and countless culinary traditions.
Our founder, inspired by years of traveling through Japan and falling in love with its cuisine, returned to Ottawa with a mission: to recreate the warmth, precision, and artistry of Japanese dining in Canada's capital. The name "Sakura Gardens" pays homage to the cherry blossom trees that symbolize both renewal and the fleeting beauty of each moment—principles that guide our approach to food.

Our Philosophy
At Sakura Gardens, we believe that exceptional cuisine starts with respect—respect for ingredients, for tradition, and for the craft. Every dish we serve follows the Japanese principle of "omotenashi," the spirit of wholehearted hospitality without expectation of reward.
We honor traditional techniques while embracing innovation. Our chefs trained in Tokyo's finest establishments before bringing their expertise to Ottawa, where they discovered the incredible quality of local Canadian ingredients. This fusion creates something unique: authentic Japanese cuisine with a distinctly Ottawa character.
Sustainability guides our sourcing decisions. We partner with local farmers, fishmongers, and artisans who share our commitment to quality and environmental responsibility. From Ottawa Valley vegetables to sustainably-caught seafood, every ingredient is chosen with care.
Meet Our Head Chef
Chef Takeshi Yamamoto leads our kitchen with over 20 years of culinary experience spanning Tokyo, Kyoto, and now Ottawa. Trained under master sushi chef Jiro Tanaka in Tokyo's Ginza district, Chef Yamamoto brings uncompromising standards and deep respect for Japanese culinary tradition to every service.
After arriving in Canada in 2016, Chef Yamamoto fell in love with Ottawa's vibrant food scene and diverse community. He saw an opportunity to share his passion for authentic Japanese cuisine while incorporating the best of what Canadian farms and waters have to offer. His philosophy is simple: "Great food doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to be honest, fresh, and made with heart."
Under his guidance, our kitchen team has become a family dedicated to excellence. Each member brings unique skills and perspectives, united by a shared commitment to creating memorable dining experiences.
Our Home in The Glebe
We chose The Glebe as our home because of its warm community spirit and appreciation for quality dining. Our location on O'Connor Street puts us at the heart of one of Ottawa's most beloved neighborhoods, where we've been welcomed with open arms.
Our dining room blends minimalist Japanese aesthetics with warm Canadian hospitality. Natural wood, soft lighting, and carefully chosen decor create an atmosphere that's both elegant and inviting—a place where you can celebrate special occasions or simply enjoy a quiet meal after work.
We're proud to be part of Ottawa's diverse culinary landscape, contributing to the city's reputation as a world-class dining destination. Whether you're a longtime lover of Japanese cuisine or trying it for the first time, Sakura Gardens welcomes you to experience the art, tradition, and flavor of Japan right here in Ottawa.
